What is Search Engine Optimization?

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is one of the fastest ways of propagating a website on the Internet. SEO makes use of search engines (SE) to increase your site’s visibility in the World Wide Web. By manipulating the elements of a given website, you can improve your website’s standing in the search engine results page (SERP). A spot within the first ten results is usually the target.
 
Now, the question is how to do it. SEO is both easy and difficult; easy since almost anybody can learn the basics given enough time, difficult since implementation requires a lot of hard work, and a lot of patience – and all that hard work doesn’t always pay off. The first thing to understand about SEO is that both visible and invisible content contribute to your website’s ranking. Let’s deal with visible content first.

Visible content generally refers to the elements in your website that everybody can see. Your site’s title, the keywords in your HTML, the overall content, and all of the outgoing links you have on-site is all part of the visible on-site content that SE spiders crawl through to calculate the site’s page rank.

• Clean up your HTML. Spiders will have an easier time crawling a website with very few buggy chunks of code.
• What keywords do you want to use? You’ll want to base a good chunk of these targeted keywords on your on-site text.
• Unique content. If your keywords aren’t at all relevant to the content of your site, this can lead to penalties from the SE’s.
• Spiders can’t or won’t crawl over everything on your site. Drop down menus and embedded flash items are good examples of these.
• Get as many links to your site and a few chosen links from it. The more relevant links you have, the better.

A website’s invisible content usually only entails one thing: the sites linking to your own website (back links). This is where a good relationship with the sites you link to come into play; if the back links to your site come from other decent-ranking websites, this can help your own ranking.
